Early Morning, Tarpon Springs, 1892
The piece
Thomas Ken wrote the text as a morning hymn for the scholars of Winchester College, and it was printed with his evening and midnight hymns in the 1695 edition of his Manual of Prayers; all three close with the doxology "Praise God, from whom all blessings flow." François-Hippolyte Barthélémon wrote the tune MORNING HYMN in the early 1780s at the request of Jacob Duché, chaplain of the Female Orphan Asylum in London.
The recording
The Choir of Norwich Cathedral sings it under David Dunnett, with Katherine Dienes-Williams at the organ, on the fifth volume of Priory's recording of every hymn in The New English Hymnal, where it is no. 232.
