Finzi drafted this movement about 1929 as the slow movement of a piano concerto he never finished, and revised it in the late 1940s and again in 1952. It was named Eclogue after his death by his family and friends, among them Howard Ferguson, who prepared the score for performance.
The recording
Peter Donohoe recorded it with the Northern Sinfonia under Howard Griffiths at the Jubilee Theatre, Gosforth, in January 2001. BBC Music Magazine gave the disc five stars.
