The piece
The Te Deum is a Latin hymn of praise from about the fourth century, now usually credited to Nicetas of Remesiana, and is sung at the end of Matins on Sundays and feasts. Its verses name in turn the angels, apostles, prophets and martyrs who praise God, then turn to Christ as judge and close with petitions.
The recording
Schola Hungarica, founded by László Dobszay and Janka Szendrei, sings the hymn as it stands in medieval Hungarian chant books. The recording comes from the first volume of Hungaroton's Magyar Gregorianum series, issued on LP in 1978.
Other recordings
Capella Antiqua München under Konrad Ruhland recorded the hymn in its simple tone, and the monks of St. Martin's Abbey, Beuron, recorded it for Deutsche Grammophon.
