The piece
Rheinberger wrote the first version of this six-part motet in 1855, at fifteen, and revised it before Simrock published it in 1873 as the third of his Op. 69. The text is Luke 24:29 in Luther's translation, the words of the two disciples at Emmaus: "Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden."
The recording
The Gesualdo Six and Owain Park recorded it in May 2024 at All Hallows, Gospel Oak, London, for Hyperion. Gramophone called the album "highly enterprising and satisfying" and singled out Rheinberger's Abendlied.
Other recordings
Kammerchor Stuttgart under Frieder Bernius recorded it for Carus as part of their Rheinberger sacred music series.
