The Little Shepherdess, 1868–72
The piece
A shepherds' song from the Haute-Auvergne, sung in Occitan as a dialogue across a river: a shepherdess calls a shepherd to bring his flock to her side, where the grass is finer. Joseph Canteloube set it for soprano and orchestra in the first series of the Chants d'Auvergne, which he arranged between 1923 and 1930.
The recording
Véronique Gens recorded it in Lille in July 2004 with the Orchestre National de Lille under Jean-Claude Casadesus. Anne Ozorio of MusicWeb International found Gens "a match for the venerable recording made by the late Victoria de los Angeles."
Other recordings
Netania Davrath's Vanguard recording with Pierre de la Roche from the early 1960s, and Victoria de los Ángeles's 1973 EMI recording with the Lamoureux Orchestra under Jean-Pierre Jacquillat.
