The piece
Brahms set Klaus Groth's poem as the last of his Fünf Gesänge, Op. 104, for unaccompanied mixed choir, published in 1888. Its three stanzas pass from falling leaves and early nightfall to a man who watches the sun go down and senses the close of his life as of the year.
The recording
Grete Pedersen and the Norwegian Soloists' Choir recorded it at Ris Church in Oslo in November 2010, for an album of Brahms and Schubert part-songs named after this piece. Gramophone made the album an Editor's Choice in February 2012.
Other recordings
The Danish National Radio Choir under Stefan Parkman recorded the Op. 104 songs for Chandos (CHAN 9806).
